What is mechanical engineering?

        Before studying mechanical engineering, anyone who wants to study it must know what it is, right? Many people have the false notion that mechanical engineers always have to work in factories. Another popular misconception is that one has to be physically strong in order to be a successful mechanical engineer. This wrong belief also forces women to avoid mechanical engineering, fearing that it involves a lot of physical work. Even though many women have interest in machines and mechanisms, they avoid choosing this subject for such a silly reason.(In one way, it is a good thing for boys since they could study without any distraction!)

       Mechanical engineering involves physical work, but not more than any other branches like Electronics and Electrical engineering require. Mechanics do difficult physical work , but not mechanical engineers. Mostly, mechanical engineers work in front of computers and in industries. Even if the job requires us to be inside a factory, the job will be simply to supervise the work done by the workers under us.

So, what does mechanical engineering actually mean?
      Mechanical engineering is a broad and diverse field of engineering dealing with the design, construction, and use of mechanical systems.
     ASME( American Society of Mechanical Engineers)  gives a beautiful description of a mechanical engineer as follows:

"  Mechanical engineers create and develop mechanical systems for all of humankind. Concerned with the principles of force, energy and motion, mechanical engineers use their knowledge of design, manufacture, and operational processes to advance the world around us — enhancing safety, economic vitality and enjoyment throughout the world."

 Mechanical engineering covers all the following fields:

• Marine Engineering
• Aerospace Engineering
• Automotive Engineering
• HVAC Engineering
• Computer Aided Engineering
• Mechatronics

            Without mechanical engineers, the world can't improve. Mechanical engineers, along with other engineers, should do their best to make the world a better place to live , without harming the environment.
